The rheumatologist prescribed a toxic dose of HC based on the patient’s height and weight. Adult dosing ranges from 200 mg or 400 mg per day 6.5mg/kg. In some cases, higher doses can be used. It is recommended one tablet twice daily if taking more than one tablet. An audit of 100 patients seen at any of nine Canadian rheumatology clinics during early 2016 showed that 30% of patients were not on appropriate weight-based hydroxychloroquine dosages, and 13% of patients on the drug had not received a baseline retinal assessment during their first year. The American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO advises weight-based dosing of 6.5 mg/kg, with an upper limit of 400 mg/day. Exceptions are individuals of short stature and obese patients, for whom the AAO advises calculating dosage based on ideal body weight for height15.

Plaquenil Arthritis Information I am on Plaquenil and it makes my stomach hurt. I take a lot of Tums and make sure I eat when I take my meds. Also, Plaquenil is hard on the eyes to some people so get them checked and tell your eye doctor you are on it and that you have RA. Good luck. I've been on plaquenil for about 14 years and have not had any problems with it.
