Aug 29, 2014 Several risk factors may increase the likelihood of retinal toxicity from Plaquenil such as, age of greater than 60 years, daily dose more than 6.5 mg/kg; use of the drug more than 5 years, obesity, preexisting retinal disease and, renal or liver failure. I was started on 200 mg BID so a 400 mg dose daily. I have not had any issues with my Plaquenil and I am thankful because it has helped so very much with the joint pain as I am not able to take NSAIDS due to my kidneys. I have not been 100% since before the worst of it all, but I have many better days where the joint pain is quite minimal.
