Nov 15, 1991 Retinal function remained stable at follow-up examinations 18 to 24 months after the cessation of hydroxychloroquine treatment. These two cases demonstrate that peripheral retinopathy, as well as maculopathy, can develop in patients who are treated with hydroxychloroquine for systemic lupus erythematosus, and that retinal function may remain stable after discontinuation of hydroxychloroquine treatment. May 02, 2018 A study of about 200 patients with a history of hydroxychloroquine retinopathy, including 36 Asian patients, found that the pericentral pattern occurred in half the Asian patients but only 2% of the white patients. 31 The mechanism for this finding is unclear, but because pericentral retinopathy spares the macula, it can be missed using standard screening methods. The hallmark of hydroxychloroquine toxicity is bilateral pigmentary retinopathy. Patients with early retinal findings are often asymptomatic despite having subtle paracentral scotomas. Patients with early retinal findings are often asymptomatic despite having subtle paracentral scotomas.

The most serious adverse effects affect the eye, with dose-related retinopathy as a concern even after hydroxychloroquine use is discontinued. The most common adverse effects are a mild nausea and occasional stomach cramps with mild diarrhea.

Do either hydroxychol/Plaquenil put you at risk for. IF Plaquinil hydroxychloroquine is an immunosuppressant, shouldn't doctors inform their patients about this as a 'potential' side effect prior to prescribing the drug? This is NOT a litigious query, but an honest question for future patients. My husband's a very intelligent man; he asks questions and talks with his doctors.
