My doctor had me discontinue it immediately, no weaning. He warned that it stays in your system for a really long time so the vision loss could continue to progress.

May 07, 2012 Saturday was a week since I stopped taking Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloroquine, per my doctor's instructions, and I think I am going through some form of withdrawal. I took the drug as a treatment for sarcoidosis and one of the side effects is a reduction in white blood cells, which is what has happened to me. Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.

11 months later went back on Hydroxychloriquine and all my symptoms disappeared as the meds took effect. I was fortunate in that they caught the vision loss early so it improved after a year off of the medicine. I discontinued Hydroxychloriquine seven years and had severe problems with inflammation within 2weeks all over my body especially the pancreas.

Apr 15, 2006 We demonstrated high efficacy of mefloquine for malaria in an area of eastern Indonesia where chloroquine is ineffective against P. falciparum and chloroquine-resistant P. vivax is well documented. In such areas where mefloquine-resistant P. falciparum has not been documented, mefloquine may be a suitable alternative treatment for either P. vivax or P. falciparum malaria.
